If you’re one of the millions of people who just bought an iPad 3rd Generation before it was discontinued and still happen to be within your return window, CNet is reporting that you’ll be able to swap out your device at an Apple Store near you for a new, 4th Generation model.

According to the tweet above, customers have confirmed with Apple Care over the phone that this policy will be in effect and CNet’s Sharon Vaknin has phoned multiple Apple Stores in the San Francisco and Bay Areas to confirm this for herself. The Apple Store employee speaking with CNet emphasized that unless the iPad shows serious wear and tear, the 14-day return policy would be waived and customers will be able to exchange their devices, so long as their purchases still lies in the 30-day return window, usually held exclusively for iPhones.

The employee did mention to Vaknin that this policy will be applied on a store-by-store basis and not all stores will be participating.

It’s likely that Apple won’t give customers a hard time about exchanging these devices because the prices are the same and the internal components aren’t drastically different.

We’ve reached out to our contact at Apple’s offices to see if Apple will institute this throughout all of its stores and will update this post as soon as we hear something concrete.
